What to Do if…

...Chemicals Get in Your Eyes

Even common chemicals like cleaning products could seriously damage your eyes. If any kind of chemical comes in contact with your eyes, it’s crucial that you flush them immediately with cool, clean water. Your eyes may feel better after a few moments, but you need to continue flushing them for a full 15 minutes to ensure you’ve rinsed out all of the chemicals. Once you’ve finished flushing out your eyes, seek medical attention.

If something is embedded in your eye tissue, get immediate medical care and avoid rubbing it. However, if something is loose in your eye like an eyelash, you may be able to remove it yourself. Do not use tweezers or any similar tools on or near your eyes.

Start by flushing your eye out with cool, clean water. If the water doesn’t wash the object out of your eye, you can moisten a clean cotton swab with clean water, and gently dab at the object. If the object doesn’t come away, seek medical attention. Avoid rubbing your eye.
